The search for purpose, meaning, and the divine propels us through life. The inherent order and beauty in chaos has fascinated people for millennia. When I was a child, my grandmother took me to a museum, and I saw a Monet exhibit. I sat in awe, staring and studying the paintings. I fell in love with what they made me think and feel. I found Salvador Dali and surrealism, Buddhist and Hindu art, Frida Kahlo, Alex Grey, and HR Geiger. The Renaissance and Mannerism. These have been my inspiration and constantly cause me to question what art is and how it can communicate so much. I have created art for as long as I can remember. Throughout my life art has always been there, not only as a way to express my thoughts and imagination, but also cathartic therapy. Picasso said, "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life". This is a perfect statement for why I feel compelled to paint, draw, etch, and doodle my inner most thoughts and feelings. Art is an amazing way to connect us to each other and to the universe. It simultaneously makes us relate to and question everything. My discovery of the Golden Spiral, or Phi, took my art and mind to a new level. It is a mathematical representation of a fractal that occurs throughout art, nature, and science as a spiral. This divine geometry connects both the infinite and finite. It exists everywhere and has been a huge influence on my work and life. Just like Pi is the formula for a perfect circle, Phi creates a perfect spiral that goes on forever. The mathematician Fibonacci defined the number sequence, which is derived from the next number being created by adding the two previous ones. 1,1,2,3,5,8,13 and so on, the numbers becoming the ratio of the spiral. Phi is represented in nautilus shells, galaxies, sunflowers, Grecian architecture, mandalas and fractals, even our DNA. It is a phenomena that inherently influences our ideal of beauty and symmetry. The divine at the tiniest, and most vast, is the same. This is ultimately what drives my exploration and creativity and I use these concepts to connect my audience to each other and the spirituality throughout the universe. I continue to experiment with different mediums, primarily in acrylic and chalk pastel and have recently started exploring oil paint. Ultimately, I am attracted to what will allow me to communicate best what I see in my head, and my heart. I frequently use a black background rather than white, reminding me of DaVinci and his thought, “A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light.” Though I express specific ideas and questions through my art, it is not my job to tell the viewer what or how to feel about it. The audience and their perception is equally important to the process of art and its message. I leave you with this: “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious.
